The Role of Persian Speech Influenced by Languages and Varieties Spoken in Iran in Shaping Audience Perceptions of Characters in Dubbed Animated Films

Abstract
The present study investigates the effect of varied speech styles on audience perceptions of animated characters in dubbed animated films. Twenty students in two groups watched videos featuring four characters who spoke Standard Persian in one version and, in the other version, spoke Persian influenced by languages and varieties common in Iran, while the speech content and audiovisual content remained constant. Data were collected using a questionnaire within the framework of the Verbal-Guise Technique (VGT) and analyzed using independent-samples t-tests and the Mann–Whitney U test. The results showed that the effect of speech style was not consistent across all dimensions or for all characters. The most consistent pattern was observed in the solidarity dimension with characters speaking the influenced variety receiving more favorable evaluations on most indicators. Overall, the findings showed that speech style, alongside audiovisual content, can play a role in shaping audience perceptions of animated characters.
