A total of 97 undergraduate EFL students participated in the study. Tests of auditory and visual attention, processing speed, verbal and nonverbal fluid intelligence, overall English language proficiency, and listening comprehension were administered to the participants. The results indicated that the measure of English proficiency had the highest correlation with the listening test followed by measures of attention and processing speed. Hierarchical regression analysis indicated that 17% of the variance in listening comprehension was explained by the cognitive factors. The addition of second language proficiency to the regression model in the second step added another 25% to the total variance explained. That is, foreign language proficiency, after controlling for cognitive abilities, can explain 25% of the variance in listening comprehension. These findings suggest that understanding when listening in L2 involves cognitive information processing skills in addition to proficiency in that language. Although correlations are not indicative of causality, future research should investigate the impact of targeted interventions on listening comprehension. Interventions that focus on supporting attention, reasoning, and processing speed may be essential to minimize the adverse consequences of poor cognitive abilities on listening comprehension.  Likewise, effective teaching techniques for reducing cognitive loads in listening activities, like simplifying complex tasks by reducing speech rate and repeating tasks, may also help learners overcome their cognitive failures. In addition, teaching and facilitating learners’ use of listening strategies can mitigate the adverse consequences of cognitive failure in listening comprehension. }, keywords = {listening comprehension,processing speed,auditory attention,visual attention,fluid intelligence}, title_fa = {سهم توانایی‌های شناختی و بسندگی زبان انگلیسی در تبیین درک شنیداری زبان انگلیسی به‌عنوان زبان خارجی}, abstract_fa = {پژوهش حاضر بر آن است تا به بررسی نقش توانایی‌های شناختی (توجه شنیداری‌/دیداری، سرعت پردازش، هوش سیال) و بسندگی عمومی زبان خارجه در درک شنیداری بپردازد. در مجموع 103 دانشجوی مقطع کارشناسی رشتة زبان انگلیسی در این پژوهش شرکت کردند. آزمون‌های توجه شنیداری و دیداری، سرعت پردازش، هوش سیال کلامی و غیرکلامی، بسندگی کلی زبان انگلیسی، و درک شنیداری به شرکت‌کنندگان داده شد. نتایج نشان داد که مقیاس بسندگی زبان انگلیسی دارای بالاترین همبستگی با آزمون شنیداری بود و پس از آن توجه و سرعت پردازش بالاترین همبستگی را داشتند. تحلیل رگرسیون سلسله مراتبی نشان داد که 16 درصد از واریانس درک شنیداری با عوامل شناختی توضیح داده می‌شود. با افزودن بسندگی زبان دوم به مدل رگرسیون در مرحلة دوم، ۱۹ درصد دیگر به مجموع واریانس توضیح داده‌شده افزوده شد. به‌عبارت دیگر، بسندگی زبان خارجی، پس از کنترل توانایی‌های شناختی، می‌تواند 19 درصد واریانس درک شنیداری را تبیین کند. یافته‌های حاصل نشان می‌دهد که توانایی‌های شناختی تقریباً به اندازة بسندگی زبان خارجی در درک شنیداری موفق حائز اهمیت‌اند.}, keywords_fa = {درک شنیداری,سرعت پردازش,توجه شنیداری,توجه دیداری,هوش سیال}, url = {https://jlts.um.ac.ir/article_29760.html}, eprint = {https://jlts.um.ac.ir/article_29760_d1ce031eb76ca33f05a950f95479b0ac.pdf} }
