Translating tourist texts: Introducing a new strategy

Tourism has always been the main concern of the organizations which are responsible for attracting tourists to visit Iran. So preparing and, especially, translating tourist texts are vital for improving tourism in our country. In this paper, we deal with the form of language used in tourist texts and the strategies of translating them by giving some examples. Domesticating and foreignising strategies are popular in translation studies and each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages in translating tourist texts. We will discuss the weak and strong points of these two strategies for translating tourist texts, especially those introducing tourist attractions in Iran and show that neither can solve all the problems associated with translating tourist texts from Persian into English. The major focus of this paper is to find a new translation strategy that can highlight and introduce Iranian culture to the target audience and keep Iranian culture intact. This neutralising strategy with its information-oriented, association-applied and concept-based principles can be employed to ensure the equivalents in information, concept and aesthetics.

Investigating Skopos Theory From the Perspective of Luhmann's Theory of Social Systems

Skopos theory ,as a functionalist approach, has made a notable switch from a lingusitic oriented to a more sociocultural concept of translation. Initially proposed by Vermeer, skopos theory framework has been applied by several researchers in their attempts to defend translators’ dignity and social status. Yet; as far as the authors are concerned, no researcher has ever employed sociological theories for supporting skopos theory and raising translators’ social status. This article aims at comparative investigation of skopos theory from the perspective of Luhmann's theory of social systems. In this regard, skopos theory’s presumptions and the critical statements for and against it are reviewed. Then, Luhmann's theory of social systems and its key concepts are explained. In the third step, the bonds of the two theories are investigated and translation subsystem and its cooperation with other social subsystems are analyzed. Finally, Luhmann’s theory is implemented to support skopos theory and to depict a different portrait of translators and their status. According to our studies, translation is not only a self-referring, external referring and distinct subsystem but also holds structural coupling, operative closure and currency. In this regard, translator’s obligation to fulfill the needs and expectations of his/her readers and those of the target society’s different subsystems must not be regarded as sign of his/her low social status. Rather, translator’s obligation must be analyzed in terms of the translation subsystem’s role and its cooperation with other social systems. As a social system, translation is obliged to connect different languages and cultures. Based on the perspective and assumptions proposed in the Luhmann’s theory of social systems, skopos theory is substantiated and translation’s real status is realized in terms of its relationships with other social systems.

the main purpose predicting the English students’ academic achievement on the basis of acheivement goals, motivational –usefulness beliefs and the kind of mobile usages. statistical population all English language students in the Faculty of Foreign language of Isfahan University from both undergraduate and graduate levels in 2011-2012. With applying random sampling method, 200 students were selected. For gathering data, self made questionnaires based on Technology Acceptance Model and achievement goals of Midgley et al’s inventory (1989) were used. Data analysis was done by using hyrarical regression analysis, Pearson’s correlation coefficient and multivariate analysis (MANOVA).Findings indicated that students’ goal orientations and their beliefs toward using of mobile cell phones were good predicators for students’ academic achievements. Variables such as facilities in mobile settings, kind, rate and the amount of mobile usages could not predicate the students’ academic achievements. There were also significant differences among girls and boys regarding students’ goal orientation and their beliefs about the role of mobile in English language learning. Based on the results of this study, it could be concluded that the English students’ attitudes toward using mobile facilities for learning English language was positive.

Culture, Cartoon, and Teaching English Language: A Qualitative Analysis of “Magic English”

Abstract
Ecological studies of language teaching have made it clear that for a better understanding of child’s developmental processes in different aspects, it is necessary to go through different layers of language teaching and to investigate them. One of these layers that can influence children’s culture, identity, and education, is media. In modern developing world, media has affected nearly all of the activities of human beings and the realm of language teaching is no exception. In this study, the researchers have investigated an educational cartoon which is called Magic English. This cartoon is a mixture of twenty different cartoons of Walt Disney. This cartoon has been analyzed from cultural and educational perspectives. The results showed that Magic English is not only rich in educational aspects but also there is a danger that watching this so-called educational program without any supervision, may deculturate children, leading to identity crisis in adulthood. In the end, some recommendations have been given.

Proposal of a Model for Critical Translation Analysis

Unlike most translation assessment models, Juliane House's Translation Quality Assessment (TQA) (House, 1997, 2009), which has been based on Halliday’s functional linguistics, does not adopt an eclectic approach to linguistics but makes full use of the discipline at all its levels. House’s model starts from the analytical level of “text” but frequently passes through its confined boundaries and formulates the mutual interactions between textual and contextual elements. It seems, however, that TQA has not evolved in accordance with recent developments of translation theory and requires fundamental manipulations to meet the analytical needs of translation in the modern ideological paradigm. The present paper reacts to House’s model and stresses the necessity for a reformulation of it. A revision of TQA has resulted in an alternative model entitled Critical Translation Analysis (CTA), which is attentive to both the "equivalence" and "intertextuality" criteria, pays attention to both the "product" and "process" of translation, reduces the unit of analysis from "text" to "communicative event", adds a new "ideological filter'' to the pre-existing filters of language and culture and, finally, takes into account the parameter of "time".

A Review of Translation and Identity in the Americas

Translation and identity in the Americas (2008) is written by professor Edwin Gentzler, an American translation theorist. The author tackles the role played by translation in shaping the American identity and suggests that translation is one of the primary tools of shaping cultures. The writing style of this book resembles very much to a research paper. Nevertheless, the use of very complex structures makes it difficult to understand. The author has taken advantage of many resources and gone on many research travels in order to formulate his work. It is classified under postcolonial studies and examines fairly new topics about cultural and linguistic translation issues. While some factors such as multilingual and original topics raised or unfamiliar grammatical structures of the book have increased the complexity of its reading and understanding, studying the book is useful to translation scholars. The present book is an important research resource for students and scholars of translation studies, comparative literature and cultural studies.
